Is Occupational Therapy Right for Your Child?

3 Dont's When Heading Out For A Jog

While you might want to get into the best shape of your life, you have to go about it the right way to prevent any injuries from occurring. You cannot simply head out and rush full force into a new exercise regimen. It takes time to build up stamina and endurance. Don't expect to be able to run a couple miles right out of the gate. Regardless of how much you want to rush into your new exercise program, you want to make sure you don't make one of the costly mistakes below.

Don't try to run too much too quickly.

Regardless of whether you are looking to increase your speed or the amount of miles you are running, you don't want to do it too quickly or you could wind up hurting yourself. Aim for about a 10 percent increase in distance each week. Going beyond that could land you with injuries to your ankles, legs and beyond.

Don't forget about warming up before exercising.

While many people don't think that you need to warm up before exercising, that isn't the case. Warming up will help prevent unnecessary injuries from occurring. Before going out and running, you want to perform a series of dynamic movements. Movements such as high knee kicks, side lunges, butt kicks and side lunges are ideal for warming up. If you are working on a limited amount of time, you should act like the first part of the run is the warm-up. This gives your body the time it needs to get going.

Don't wear shoes that don't provide you with ample support.

If you run in shoes that don't provide you with ample support, you could end up with ankle injuries that could have been prevented. Wearing an ankle brace or arch support can help to protect your feet even more when coupled with a good pair of shoes. Remember, shoes are only going to last for so long before you need to replace them. Try the shoes out before purchasing them. Go through a few different shoes and compare them before making a final purchase decision.

Ankle injuries are no fun, which is why it is so important to keep your feet as protected as possible when heading out for a jog. Taking the time to prepare yourself beforehand can go a long way in keeping your body in top shape every step of the way. Click here for more info.
